Cast Iron Cookware

1/29/2015

I love cooking with Cast Iron! There have been times when my cast iron skillets didn't look so great. They were rusty from water sitting in them.  I wished I would have known about the salt and potato trick when I was trying to clean mine.  There are times when cast iron skillets can be found very inexpensive because they are rusted.  Keep an eye out and buy them when they are cheap. Use the video as a reference on how to clean them.  I have stopped using nonstick pans and use an assortment of sizes of cast iron skillets.  You just can't beat a seasoned cast iron skillet to cook in and clean up it a cinch.  Check out the video.

Hair Care Tip

1/8/2015

On a recent Dr. Oz show he suggested rinsing your hair in cool water, do you know why he recommended that?  If you rinse your hair in cool water (with or without conditioner) it helps to close the cuticle on each hair strand.  With the cuticle closed it makes it easier to comb through your hair and it also looks shinier.  If you rinse your hair with warm to hot water it keeps the cuticle open making it harder to comb through and  your conditioner is going down the drain.  Save yourself frustration (and money on conditioner and hot water) shampoo as you normally would, condition if using and rinse in the coolest water that you can handle. I can tell you this tip works with my long hair because if I don't use conditioner and rinse in cool water I'm not getting a comb through the it wet or dry.  Keep it Cool!

Car Emergency Kits-Winter

1/3/2015

With the recent closure on I-40 it got my thinking about what would be good to keep in my car.  Here's a good list from http://www.almanac.com/emergency-car-kit.  I would add other dried fruits, nuts, beef jerky or other low sugar foods. A 12-volt coffee mug that plugs into the cigarette lighter would be good for warming water then you could add instant coffee, tea, hot chocolate, instant oatmeal or even instant/cup of soup.  Once you decide on what food to put in your kit make sure you have utensils to use.  Next add clothes or blankets to keep you warm and a cell phone to call for help.  I know that there are a lot more items to add but this is a sample of what I would use.  Be Prepared.

Tiphero is one of my favorite sites to visit and they have a list of 7 Things to Buy in January.  It also lists Seasonal Produce. Buying seasonal produce costs less than those that aren't in season.  Have a great day!
